Across Ofsted

This section contains news from across the sectors we inspect and regulate.

News

Ofsted’s website: continuing to improve - The results of our website survey during January 2012 have helped us to make further improvements to the site since it was re-launched in July 2011. We have introduced a new search facility on the website, with automatic search suggestions for popular terms, new icons and dropdown options to the main menu to make it easier for visitors to find the information they are looking for. Our pages have a ‘more like this’ section to help users find related material.

Schools

In this issue, you can find out what some readers had to say when they were invited to a webinar with an Ofsted inspector. We discuss the findings from our survey report about art, craft and design education in schools and we highlight the increasing number of parents that have registered their views using the Parent View online questionnaire. We also take a look at the music videos, which have proved to be popular on our website and on YouTube.

News

Community forum members join Ofsted inspector for a webchat - Readers of www.allaboutyou.com posed questions about school inspection to Maria Dawes, Ofsted’s Principal Officer of Education and Care, on 18 April 2012. Discussions included Ofsted’s Parent View website and the Good education for all consultation which includes proposals to carry out no-notice inspections. The consultation closes on 3 May 2012.

'Making a mark' - Not enough pupils develop their creativity through confident drawing - An Ofsted report looking at art, craft and design education in schools and colleges has found that, after getting off to a confident early start, pupils’ progress slowed during primary school and was no better than satisfactory at the start of secondary school. The report says that opportunities available out of school, such as visits to art galleries, are not made clear enough to pupils, parents and carers.

Looking at music in schools - More than 10,800 people have looked at the music films available on our YouTube channel, which show outstanding music lessons in six schools, since we published them last month with the report Music in Schools: wider still and wider.

Rate your child's school on Parent View - More than 31,000 parents and carers have completed our Parent View survey. If you are a parent or carer, you simply need your email address and a password to register on the Parent View website. Once your login has been activated. it only takes a few minutes to rate your child’s school against the 12 questions.

In this edition, we would like to hear your views about our proposals to inspect secure training centres with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons. You can read about how we are encouraging children and young people, parents and carers and other users to tell us about the quality of the services that you receive. We have made changes to the way we inspect children's homes and produced video films and special questionnaires about fostering and adoption. Our adoption report finds out what is causing delays in placing children with families, and the Children's Rights Director for England writes about the recent After care report.

News

Seeking users' views on quality of care - We have published two short films on our website that explain to children and young people how they can make a difference to fostering and adoption inspections. We are also encouraging users of social care services to go online and tell us about the quality of care they receive.

Ofsted and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons launch new approach to the inspection of secure training centres (STCs) - Ofsted and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) are seeking your views on a new joint arrangement to inspect STCs.

Court delays keep children waiting for adoption - Ofsted's report Right on time: exploring delays in adoption finds that the most significant cause of delay for children needing adoption is the length of time it takes for cases to be completed in court. The average time taken to complete care proceedings in the cases inspectors examined was almost 14 months. The report urges the government to act quickly to implement the recommendations of the Family Justice Review which will tackle some of the root causes of delay in the system.

New arrangements to inspect local authority child protection services - Ofsted has produced a guide for children and young people which explains how we will inspect a local council’s child protection services from May 2012. Before introducing the new arrangements, we took into account the views of children and young people, parents and carers and professionals through a consultation we ran between July and September 2011. We also took on board recommendations from an independent review of child protection in England, carried out in 2010-11 by Professor Eileen Munro.

Features

Support beyond life in care - Dr Roger Morgan, the Children’s Rights Director for England, shares his thoughts about the After care report he published in March, for which he asked the views of those leaving care and heading for independent adult life.

Adult learning and skills

This month, you can find out what the key factors are that help apprenticeships to succeed, and we take a look at art, craft and design provision for those aged over 16 and in initial teacher education.

News

Apprentices more likely to succeed if they have completed meaningful work experience - A best practice report on apprenticeships for young people has found that those who had completed work experience, course tasters or vocational study were more likely to make good progress in their apprenticeship than those starting straight from school without it.

'Making a mark' - Not enough pupils develop their creativity through confident drawing - An Ofsted report looking at art, craft and design education in schools and colleges has recommended that there should be increased opportunities for learners to reflect on and develop their roles as emerging artists, craftmakers and designers by enabling them to work with others and to exhibit their work publicly.
