Preparing for a maintained school inspection
Telling parents and carers
A school must take all reasonable steps to tell parents and carers, including registered parents and carers of pupils who have been excluded or are away from school, that the school is going to be inspected.
We provide schools with a standard letter for parents and carers for the school to use. It is available in English and many community languages. The letter informs parents about the inspection and has a short, confidential questionnaire for parents and carers to complete, so they can tell the lead inspector what they think of the school. Parents and carers are asked to return the questionnaire to the inspection team to look at as part of the evidence for inspection.
We also have a leaflet about school inspection, School inspections: a guide for parents and carers, which schools must provide to parents and carers.
A school must tell its local authority that it has an inspection.
Staff and pupil questionnaires
Inspectors use questionnaires to find out what staff and pupils think about the school.
The staff questionnaire is voluntary.
